For this first post I'd like to talk about Green Lantern: Secret Origin (New Edition) by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Since the movie is coming out in a few short weeks (17th of June I think, though I could be wrong), I thought I would pick it up and check it out. I've heard good things before and I can say I was not disappointed. The fact that the new cover is a a pic of Ryan Reynolds did not sway me. Not a bit. Okay a bit.
I will try to refrain from writing a synopsis of the story, or revealing any spoilers for those that may not have picked up the book, though I'm guessing most of you have already boarded this train and I'm the fat guy struggling with his elephant sized luggage. I may be annoying, smelly and late but I'm here now. Embrace me fellow geeks! It's not my job to take you through the story, it's the writers, so I will offer my opinion and leave it there. If you've never read it, then enjoy the story as the writer tells it. If you have, then you don't need me to tell you again you lazy gits.
I am mostly a Marvel fan, but I do have interest in reading more DC. I know next to nothing about Green Lantern but that was no problem when reading this story. It explains things clearly and in a constantly entertaining way. Obviously this is an origin story and by the look of it I'm guessing it shares a lot with the upcoming film version, though the plot looks to be different. (The villain in the movie will be parralax by all accounts, who does not show up here.)
I can say with all honesty that I am now very interested in the character of Green Lantern, and will likely begin picking up the newer issues. (Perhaps if the rumors of DC Universe reboot are to be believed I will pick up the new #1)
Focusing on the matter at hand though, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The art is fantastic, especially when the story gets to Oa and we begin to meet more of the cast of alien Green Lanterns who range from a racoon like creature to a fish man to a red skinned chap called Sinestro. I wonder if he's a villain? The colors here really shine through and make the book genuinely beautiful to look at.
The story is well paced, and as the reader we learn things as Hal Jordan does, making it, at least for those like me, exciting and fresh unlike most comic book superhero stories which we've been reading for years. This may sound odd since the character has been around for a long time, but I've never held any interest for this title. The news of a movie adaptation, and excitement surrounding master comic book writer Geoff Johns lit a fire within me. It's about a super powered space cop.
I should love this. And I do.
I urge anyone who has yet to read this to do so. If you like comics. If you like superheroes. If you like mint choc chip ice cream.('cause that's what Green Lantern makes me crave.)
So if you've not got around to getting this book, or by some miracle I've convinced you to, take the opportunity now and click on the link below for a great Amazon deal.
